Getting Started with Peptides — Beginner's Guide
Getting Started with Peptides — Your Complete First-Timer's Guide
A step-by-step guide for anyone new to peptide research. Everything you need to know before your first reconstitution and injection.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before you do anything else, make sure you have everything:
Essential (You Cannot Start Without These)
- Peptide vial(s) — Your chosen peptide from Peptide Shop UK
- Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) — 10mL vials. This is NOT the same as sterile water. BAC water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, allowing multiple draws from the same vial over 28 days.
-
Insulin syringes — We recommend starting with 0.5mL (50 unit) syringes. They're versatile enough for most peptides.
- 0.3mL (30 unit): Best for tiny doses (Semax, Selank, CJC/IPA at low doses)
- 0.5mL (50 unit): Best all-rounder (BPC-157, TB-500, moderate doses)
- 1.0mL (100 unit): Best for larger doses (NAD+, Tirzepatide, TB-500 loading)
- Alcohol swabs — Individually wrapped, for wiping vial tops and injection sites
- Sharps bin — Legal requirement in the UK for safe needle disposal. Available from pharmacies.
Recommended (Makes Life Easier)
- Small labels or marker pen — For labelling reconstituted vials (peptide name, date, concentration)
- Notebook or phone app — For tracking doses, timing, and effects
- Clean, flat workspace — A clean counter or desk for reconstitution
Step 2: Which Syringe for Which Peptide?
| Peptide | Typical Dose Range | Recommended Syringe | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| BPC-157 | 250-500mcg | 0.5mL (50 unit) | 5-10 unit draws — good precision |
| TB-500 | 500-1,500mcg | 1.0mL (100 unit) | 20-60 unit draws — needs volume |
| Semaglutide | 0.25-1.0mg | 0.3mL or 0.5mL | 5-20 unit draws — precision matters |
| Tirzepatide | 2.5-10mg | 1.0mL (100 unit) | 50-100 unit draws — large volume |
| CJC-1295 + IPA | 100-300mcg each | 0.3mL (30 unit) | 5-15 unit draws — needs precision |
| NAD+ | 50-200mg | 1.0mL (100 unit) | 50-100 unit draws — large volume |
| Semax / Selank | 200-600mcg | 0.3mL (30 unit) | Small precise doses |
| PT-141 | 1-2mg | 0.5mL (50 unit) | 10-20 unit draws |
| GHK-Cu | 1-5mg | 0.5mL (50 unit) | Variable — depends on reconstitution |
Rule of thumb: If your dose requires less than 5 units on a 100-unit syringe, use a smaller syringe for better precision.
Step 3: How to Reconstitute (Mix Your Peptide)
This is the most important skill to learn. Take your time the first time.
What You Need
- Your peptide vial (powder/lyophilised form)
- BAC water vial
- A fresh, clean syringe
- Alcohol swabs
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
-
Wipe both vial tops with separate alcohol swabs. Let air dry (10 seconds).
-
Draw BAC water into your syringe:
- Insert needle into BAC water vial
- Turn vial upside down
- Pull plunger to desired amount (check your peptide's guide for how much)
- Remove any air bubbles (tap syringe, push plunger slightly)
-
Add water to peptide vial:
- Insert needle into peptide vial
- AIM THE STREAM AT THE GLASS WALL — let water trickle down the side
- DO NOT squirt water directly onto the powder (can denature the peptide)
- Push plunger slowly and steadily
-
Let it dissolve:
- Remove the syringe
- Swirl gently — tilt and rotate the vial
- NEVER shake — shaking can break peptide bonds and ruin the product
- If slightly cloudy, set on a flat surface for 5 minutes. Should become clear.
-
Label the vial: Write the peptide name, date, and concentration
- Example: "BPC-157 | 16 Feb 2026 | 2,500mcg/mL"
-
Refrigerate immediately (2-8°C)
Common BAC Water Amounts
| Peptide | Vial Size | BAC Water | Concentration |
|---|---|---|---|
| BPC-157 | 5mg | 2mL | 2,500mcg/mL |
| TB-500 | 5mg | 2mL | 2,500mcg/mL |
| Semaglutide | 5mg | 2mL | 2.5mg/mL |
| Tirzepatide | 10mg | 2mL | 5mg/mL |
| CJC-1295 | 5mg | 2.5mL | 2,000mcg/mL |
| Ipamorelin | 5mg | 2.5mL | 2,000mcg/mL |
| NAD+ | 500mg | 5mL | 100mg/mL |
Step 4: Calculate Your Dose
The Universal Formula
Three steps, every time:
1. Concentration = Vial size (mg) × 1000 ÷ BAC water added (mL) = mcg/mL
2. Volume to draw = Your dose (mcg) ÷ Concentration (mcg/mL) = mL
3. Syringe units = Volume (mL) × Total syringe units
Worked Example: BPC-157 Starter Dose
- Vial: 5mg. BAC water: 2mL.
- Concentration: 5 × 1000 ÷ 2 = 2,500 mcg/mL
- Want 250mcg: 250 ÷ 2,500 = 0.1mL
- On a 100-unit syringe: 0.1 × 100 = 10 units
- On a 50-unit syringe: 0.1 × 50 = 5 units
Worked Example: Semaglutide Starter
- Vial: 5mg. BAC water: 2mL.
- Concentration: 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5mg/mL (or 2,500mcg/mL)
- Want 0.25mg: 0.25 ÷ 2.5 = 0.1mL
- On a 100-unit syringe: 0.1 × 100 = 10 units
Pro tip: Use our online calculator
Don't want to do the maths? Use the Peptide Shop UK Dosage Calculator → — select your peptide, enter your BAC water amount, pick your dose, and it tells you exactly how many units to draw.
Step 5: Your First Injection
Before You Inject
- Reconstituted vial from fridge (can let warm 1-2 minutes — room temp stings less)
- Fresh, sterile insulin syringe (never reuse syringes)
- Alcohol swab
- Calm, well-lit space
Drawing Your Dose
- Wipe the peptide vial top with alcohol swab
- Insert syringe needle into vial
- Turn vial upside down
- Pull plunger to your calculated units
- Check for air bubbles — tap syringe gently, push plunger slightly to expel air
- Remove from vial
Injection Technique (Subcutaneous)
- Choose your site: Belly fat (most common — 2 inches away from navel), outer thigh, or back of upper arm
- Clean the site with alcohol swab. Let air dry completely (10 seconds).
- Pinch the skin — grab a fold of skin and fat between thumb and forefinger
- Insert the needle at a 45-degree angle (90° if you have more subcutaneous fat)
- Push the plunger slowly and steadily — don't rush
- Wait 5 seconds before withdrawing the needle (ensures full dose delivered)
- Withdraw and apply light pressure with a clean swab. Don't rub.
- Dispose of syringe in sharps bin immediately
Injection Site Rotation
Rotate your injection sites to prevent irritation and lipodystrophy (tissue changes from repeated injections in same spot):
- Abdomen: Divide into 4 quadrants around the navel. Rotate clockwise.
- Thighs: Alternate left and right, front of thigh
- Arms: Upper arm fat pad, alternate sides
- Rule: Never inject in the exact same spot twice in a row
Step 6: Storage
| What | Where | How Long |
|---|---|---|
| Unreconstituted peptide (powder) | Room temp or fridge | 12+ months |
| Unreconstituted peptide | Freezer | 24+ months (best long-term) |
| Reconstituted peptide (liquid) | Fridge 2-8°C ONLY | 28 days max |
| BAC water | Room temperature | Until expiry date |
| Insulin syringes | Room temp, sealed packaging | Until expiry |
Golden rules:
- Always refrigerate after reconstitution
- Never freeze reconstituted peptides
- Never leave reconstituted vials at room temperature
- Label every vial with contents, date, and concentration
- Discard if solution becomes cloudy, discoloured, or has particles
Step 7: Common Mistakes (Avoid These)
- Squirting BAC water directly onto powder → Always aim down the glass wall
- Shaking the vial → Swirl gently. Shaking breaks peptide bonds.
- Using sterile water instead of BAC water → Sterile water has no preservative. Must use within 24-48 hours. BAC water lasts 28 days.
- Reusing syringes → Never. Fresh syringe every injection. Bacteria and dull needles cause problems.
- Not rotating injection sites → Rotate to prevent tissue damage
- Storing reconstituted peptides at room temp → Must refrigerate. Peptides degrade rapidly at room temperature.
- Skipping alcohol swabs → Always clean vial tops and injection sites. Infection prevention.
- Guessing doses → Always calculate. Use our calculator if maths isn't your thing.
- Starting multiple peptides simultaneously → Start one at a time. If you react to something, you need to know which peptide caused it.
- Expecting overnight results → Most peptides take 2-4 weeks to show noticeable effects. Be patient and consistent.
